Trump Suggests Relocation of FIFA World Cup Fixtures from the Boston area, Olympics from Los Angeles

Donald Trump has yet again stated he would urge FIFA to pull upcoming World Cup games from a venue based on municipal governance, with the Boston region now being the third such city to encounter such warnings from the White House. Moreover, Trump remarked he would contemplate similar action against LA for the 2028 Olympics due to possible public safety risks.

Jurisdictional Limits and Informal Leverage

Although Trump lacks formal power to directly relocate either tournament, he may apply pressure the organizing committees in charge of each event to move venues.

Context of Remarks

His comments were made during a media briefing with Argentinian president Milei, who was at the executive mansion following the revelation of a massive bailout for the Argentine country. Near the close of the meeting, a media member inquired Trump about a latest unauthorized gathering in downtown Boston where authorities were attacked and a cruiser was set on fire. The journalist also asked if such events could lead to the removal of hosting duties for the expanded World Cup.

“We could take them away,” he said concerning the soccer fixtures, set to be hosted at the Massachusetts arena. “The city's leader is ineffective … they're radical left, and they are taking over parts of the city. It's a significant assertion, don't you think?”

Urban Disturbances and Public Safety Concerns

Unauthorized gatherings, a digitally organized phenomenon where participants gather on city streets late at night to engage in dangerous driving, have emerged as a frequent problem in American cities since the lockdown shutdowns. Recent similar events have escalated into violence in the region, notably in the city. Yet, these occurrences are typically not seen as associated with any specific political ideology.

“In cases where a mayor is doing a bad job, and I perceive there are dangerous circumstances, I will call Gianni [Infantino], who is excellent, and tell him let’s move it to a different city,” the former president stated during the event. “And he would do that. He may not enjoy doing it, but he'd agree. Readily, he’d do it.”

FIFA Relationship

Gianni Infantino has been open his attempts to be visibly associated with Trump prior to the 2026 event, planned to be hosted in 11 cities across the America along with several in the northern neighbor and three in the southern neighbor. The FIFA president has participated at several presidential functions, arranged for Trump present the Club World Cup trophy after that tournament’s final, and has even postponed his own organization’s congress to join Trump on a journey to the Middle East earlier in 2025.

Previous Threats

Nevertheless, Trump from warning about the relocation of FIFA World Cup events from different locations. Recently, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis came under parallel comments, with Trump claiming both urban centers were “governed by ideological activists who are clueless what they are doing,” while questioning the public safety of both locales and claiming that games could be shifted.

Organizational Statement

The organization's deputy Montagliani dismissed Trump’s statements when he commented subsequently at a conference in London.

“This is FIFA’s tournament, FIFA’s jurisdiction, FIFA makes those decisions,” the vice-president said. “Respectfully to current world leaders, soccer is transcends political figures and soccer will endure their tenure and their policies. That is the beauty of football, that it is transcends one leader and bigger than individual states.”

Olympics Threat

During the event, Trump’s reply to a query about Boston included a parallel statement regarding the LA Olympic event.

“In case I perceived LA was not adequately ready, I'd relocate it to another location if I had to,” he said. “Regarding that event I’d probably have to obtain a varying consent, but we will do that.”

Official consent Trump mentioned would must come from the Olympic governing body. Their president, Kirsty Coventry, was selected to her post in this year and has so far not hold a public appearance with Trump, although she stated that she would like a meeting with him at eventually.

Additional Criticism

He also criticized Gavin Newsom’s management of the LA wildfires, saying that a similar situation could cause the removal of the event.

“If the governor refuses to cooperate, we are going to have to be very tough,” Trump said.

The warning was equally direct for Boston.

“The city better improve their situation,” he said. “It's I will say.”
