Typhoon Matmo Struck Coastal China Bringing Widespread Evacuations
The powerful storm struck the coast on the coastal regions of China on the weekend, following its passage over the provincial island of Hainan. The intense weather forced the evacuation of approximately 350,000 residents, delivering heavy downpours and destructive gusts, especially between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Hainan's Wenchang. Boat transport were suspended and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport.
Storm Details
The typhoon, this year's 21st typhoon of 2025, recorded wind speeds of 151km/h and dumped more than 50mm of rainfall in six hours in Qinzhou and Chongzou. The city of the region also received significant rain amounts.
The storm triggered China's highest-level emergency warning, with disturbances in Zhanjiang, where commercial activities, transportation systems and highways were closed. In the special administrative region, 100 flights were impacted and 30 cancelled.
Future Projections
As the typhoon moves inland towards the provincial area in the neighboring country, it is expected to diminish into a less intense system with 89km/h winds but will continue to bring substantial precipitation. Vietnam's northern regions could face 130-150mm on Monday, increasing the threat of inundation and landslides. The weather pattern is expected to move towards Yunnan region in China, where further intense rain is probable.
Other Storm Systems
At the same time, Hurricane Priscilla developed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on the weekend, initially as a storm system. It prompted a storm watch for south-western regions from a coastal point to another location on Monday.
In the early hours of the next day, Priscilla was about 305 miles from Cabo Corrientes with sustained winds of 65mph. It strengthened into a hurricane in the night, when sustained winds peaked at 121km/h.
Though not expected to make landfall, the storm is expected to produce hazardous swells and strong currents as it tracks north-west along the coast towards a Mexican state. Substantial rain is forecast on Monday, reaching a considerable volume in Michoacán and western Guerrero, with local totals at about 200mm. Other regions could receive moderate to heavy rain.
In other parts, Cyclone Shakhti has formed as the first post-monsoon storm system of 2025 in the a body of water, causing an warning from the India Meteorological Department for an Indian state. On that day, Shakhti was 209 kilometers south-east of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 64mph.
Shakhti, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is forecast to recurve towards the east into the the sea. Rough seas are expected to continue along the Gujarat-North Maharashtra coast and intense rain is anticipated in coastal districts including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
