Unusual Scarlet Electrical Discharge Photographed in the Atmosphere

A team of photography enthusiasts operating in New Zealand have successfully captured visual evidence of red lightning, among the most elusive atmospheric displays on Earth, in which glowing scarlet illuminations become visible in the sky.

An Unforgettable Night of Discovery

The photographers had originally set out to photograph the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the southern region of the country on 11 October, before encountering the extraordinary event.

Assuming they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their shooting session turned into “a night to remember,” a team member stated.

Upon examining his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and found he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the individual said. “We just could not believe it – it resulted in excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the night.”

Understanding Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the higher atmospheric layers, produced by storm systems. In contrast to traditional lightning that aims at the surface, the phenomena shoot upwards towards the higher altitudes, producing shapes that resemble vertical forms, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a such an event was captured – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Fleeting and Dreamlike Sightings

They are so brief – persisting for a mere instant – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but a team member was fortunate. “I happened to be looking right at one when it took place – pure chance viewing the correct area of the sky and I observed a brief red flash,” he explained.

Seeing the events was a dream for the artist, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It seems that you are observing something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … there is an intense scarlet hue that is present only momentarily, so it is fascinating to observe.”

Technical and Creative Mastery

Recording a red sprite needs a proficiency with technical photography, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and artistic vision, he stated. “It is a deeply engaging type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”

One of the other individuals commented it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his existence. “I was able to observe the starry river glowing above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of illumination swayed above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he said.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no further recordings capturing crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.

“This was a singular occasion when you understand you are seeing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
